Fussy

Design brief

Fussy approached BLOND in 2020 to design a refillable deodorant with a screw-base actuator that could house compostable refills. To facilitate their subscription service, the refills had to fit through UK letterboxes.

Research

From the start, we leaned into the restrictions and asked fundamental questions that would allow us to re-imagine the product completely. We questioned why deodorants need to stand upright, why they couldn’t be more discrete, and how we could improve upon existing refillable cosmetics, many of which do not consider the container’s end-of-life.

Ideation

One key initial phase of the ideation was to study ways to interact and refill deodorants, helping us to define the most optimal and intuitive user experience.

Inspiration

Our intent was to create a smooth and subtle shaped object to reflect the natural and sustainable approach Fussy and Blond were aiming for.

Story

As Fussy’s aim is to reduce the amount of single-use plastics that end up in oceans, we took inspiration from the humble pebble.

Story

Unlike other deodorants, Fussy lies flat and more closely resembles a bar of soap, helping it to blend into its environment.

Awards

Fussy was awarded a Reddot design award, a European product design award, a Silver and a Gold IDA design award, and was also one of the longlisted projects at the 2021 Dezeen awards.
